Do you have any legal disclaimers to get out of the way first? Neither myself (Steve Frampton) nor any of the contributors (listed at the end of this document) shall be held liable for any damages caused to any part by the information (or mis-information, as the case may be) contained within this document, including but not limited to, special, incidental, consequential, or other damages. Although every attempt has been made to ensure a reasonable degree of accuracy is contained herein, this document has been prepared more as a general guide to Lila Feng for her devoted fans, and probably contains as much hearsay and speculation as fact. Should Lila Feng, or an agent of Lila, should wish to correct any incorrect statements about Lila, they can send corrections to the FAQ maintainer (see question #14 for contact information) and they will be added to this document as soon as possible. ---=== 1) Who is Lila Feng? Lila Feng is an attractive Asian woman, who is one of the weather anchor-women on Canada's own "The Weather Network" cable television station. Seen coast to coast, usually in the late evening, Lila has attracted a cult-like following. In the words of a fan: "I watched Lila since the day she started for the network. She was unpolished, she was not so professional with her makeup, and she was so nervous while giving the weathercasts that, to put it bluntly, her saliva kept getting in the way of her words. :-) However, her shy demeanor only added to her charm, and from that day I was smitten with her beauty. Since then I have watched Lila transform herself into a professional veteran who does her job with ease. Lila is true poetry in motion. My only regret is that she is on so late in the day. :-) " Indeed, should The Weather Network ever decide to lay Lila off in favour of cheaper labour, it would not surprise us if they were deluged with hate mail demanding her immediate recall. ---=== 2) What are Lila's responsibilities on The Weather Network? At one time Lila was quite active in forecasting the weather to viewers. However, as she is no longer seen in that role it is possible she has been given a promotion. Lila can now be seen in the late-hours of the day in a miriad of "desk reporting" roles. She discusses major weather disasters, as well as notable weather facts from previous years. One of her major responsibilities is reporting on "Earth Watch". In a P.R. clip shown recently, I was surprised that Lila takes an active (major?) role in finding suitable material for "Earth Watch", actually does the editing(!) for that segment, as well as doing her own makeup. Indeed, everything this woman does seems to add to her fans' adolation of her! ---=== 3) I don't have access to this newsgroup on my system. Help! Sorry, you are out of luck at this time. Perhaps you could convince your system administrator to carry alt.fan.lila-feng at your site. In the interim, if you really need to post something to the newsgroup and simply don't have access, you can send your submission via e-mail to and it will be posted to the alt.fan.lila-feng newsgroup automatically. ---=== 4) How can I send fan-mail to Lila Feng? Your best bet at this time would be to contact her c/o The Weather Network. Here is the address: The Weather Network 1755 Rene Leveque Suite 251 Montreal, Quebec CANADA H2K 4P6 ---=== 5) Is Lila aware of this newsgroup? At the moment, probably not...however bear in mind that this forum is brand new. The newsgroup was created on December 16, 1993. Prior to the newsgroup, there was a small mailing list in operation since October 15, 1993. When membership increases to a reasonable size then perhaps we will look into contacting her by some means and let her know she has a fan club. [Ed: 9,300 people are estimated to read this group - is that enough? :-) ] Of course, Lila *may* know about this group -- are those cute smiles she gives us at the end of each spot a job requirement, or are they really for her fans? :-) ---=== 6) How many people read this newsgroup anyway? According to the "USENET Readership report" (arbitron) published monthly by Brian Reid , about 9,300 people are estimated to read the alt.fan.lila-feng newsgroup world-wide. Here is the complete data since January 1, 1994, as follows: (a) - Ranking (out of approximately 2840 groups). (b) - Estimated number of readers world-wide. (c) - Actual number of readers in sampled population. (d) - Percentage of sites receiving alt.fan.lila-feng. (e) - Number of messages in given month. (f) - Size (in K) of all messages in given month. (g) - Percentage that articles are cross-posted to other groups. (h) - Cost per month (in US $) per reader. (i) - Percentage of all newsreaders who read alt.fan.lila-feng. (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) (i) 2642 9300 113 24% 32 199.3 0% 0.01 0.2% January 1994 This information contains data for USENET sites only, and does not include readers on connected networks such as CompuServe or Fidonet. Since this newsgroup was created on December 16, 1993 there have been 79 articles posted (just under 2 per day). This amount will probably increase drastically when more people are made aware of this newsgroup. [Ed: This no longer appears to be a reliable survey. Is this survey still being conducted? If so, anybody got some updated statistics?] ---=== 7) How can I increase the awareness and popularity of this group? First of all, bear in mind that this forum is relatively new. It was only recently that the Lila FAQ was approved for cross-posting to news.answers. It may take some time before many sites carry this group. However, if you wish to help increase people's awareness of this group, perhaps one of the suggestions listed below may appeal to you: - Word of mouth. Don't underestimate the power of word of mouth. Tell your friends if they are fans of Lila Feng! Perhaps consider posting something around your university or work site (if you don't mind being labelled as being somewhat "strange"). :-) - If you carry the alt.fan.lila-feng newsgroup on your system, perhaps you'd consider taking part in the 'arbitron' survey compiled by Brian Reid? Each month, the top 2840 groups are listed, including the number of readers world-wide, the percentage of sites that carry the group, the number of articles, etc. This information is compiled by data sent from participating sites, purely on a volunteer basis. This is one way the alt.fan.lila-feng group can climb higher on the ratings list, thereby possibly gaining the notice of sites or subscribers not currently aware of this group. I'll post this information from time to time to alt.fan.lila-feng for your interest. ---=== 8) How old is Lila? What nationality is she? Is she single or married? Although the answer to many of these questions is not known at this time, I have heard from a number of people who knew Lila in the past who have contributed the following information: Lila is Chinese, probably 2nd generation. She was born in Nova Scotia. Her father James, who is a lawyer, is from Shianghai and her mother Tina is a 2nd generation Chinese Filipino from the province of Fujian. It has been said that her mother is (was?) "a serious crab", but one might forgive the motives of a mother with an attractive daughter. :-) Lila is dynamic and friendly, apparently unmarried, and is about 28 years old. It is quite likely that Lila does not know how to speak Chinese. In secondary school Lila seemed quite talented in interpretive dance. It is not known if she has continued with this art. Her family name, "Feng" is the same as the Cantonese name "Fong" but her family hails from Si Chuen province in mainland China, and her name is in the dialect of Chinese spoken there (Mandarin?). She grew up in a suburb of Montreal and attended elementary and secondary school there. She attended Beaconsfield High School somewhere around 1979-1981 (give or take). From there she went on to CEGEP at Marianopolis College, a private school, from which she graduated around 1984. She then went on to McGill University where she received a degree in communications. In secondary school she was in the English-only stream instead of a billingual stream, so even though she is a "Quebecer" she may not speak any French. However, this probably makes her even more appealing to 75% of Canadians. :-) Apparently, she invented a new position and got herself elected to it when she was in Communications at McGill. She did a lot of work producing at the local CTV affiliate, CFCF, and may have also worked at CBMT, Canada's first television station, the local English CBC affiliate. There was a full-page article on Lila in the Montreal Gazette a few years after she graduated from McGill (between 1988 and 1991). If anyone can get access to a computerized index of Canadian Periodicals and send in the article, perhaps it can be excerpted for inclusion in this document. It may be possible to get a bio on Lila from The Weather Network. Anybody got the b*lls to contact them and ask for one? ;-) ---=== 9) Can Lila be seen via satellite? Yes! The coordinates are: Satellite Anik E2 (107.3 degrees West), Transponder 1. ---=== 10) I've heard Lila does radio weathercasting. What stations is she on? Toronto, Ontario, CANADA: 680 kHz (AM), CFTR. Weekday nights 9pm-6am. [contributions appreciated] ---=== 11) Are there any GIF's of Lila anywhere? Yes, there is currently one GIF available that shows Lila in her anchor duties, wearing a black jacket and white shirt with a floral design. You may retrieve this file by FTP via itre.uncecs.edu. Chdir to the /pub/satellite/images directory, and then get "lila1.gif". Make sure you do a binary transfer. If you're interested in what the other pictures are, use a WWW client and this URL: http://itre.uncecs.edu/misc/images/images.html If you choose this method, have patience, the network line there is quite slow. Of course, other GIF's would be appreciated, and can be posted to the alt.fan.lila-feng newsgroup. One image that would please many would be to see Lila in her rare (discontinued?) duty as stand-up weathercaster. ---=== 12) Quotables: Why do so many people admire Lila Feng? Fan club members respond: "Three words: Accent, accent, accent." - John Hansen "It's the smile and the silk camisoles, no question." - Anonymous Further quotations would be appreciated. :-) ---=== 13) Who contributed to this FAQ document? I would like to thank the following people for their contributions: Jay Novello Glen Houghton Ron Hitchens Mark Nagel Eldon Sprickerhoff John Hansen Trong Nguyen Laurence Palter Sam <72263.3667@compuserve.com> Andrew Lapsley [...apologies to anyone I forgot to mention...] ---=== 14) How can *I* contribute some info to the FAQ? Please send all contributions via e-mail to: and if appropriate, will be included in the FAQ as soon as possible. ---=== 15) In the perspicacious words of Janet Jackson, "Is that the end?" Yes it is. Thank you for reading. ------------------------------------------------------------ Steve Frampton E-mail:
